FROM PRADA TO NADA

This movie is coming out this week, and I have some mixed feelings about it. Yes, I'm glad we Latinos seem to be having a little more mainstream media exposure, yet it's still the same stereotypical roles, and then again it's just a teen movie right, or is it? I wonder how damaging roles like these really are to our Latino community, or if it's actually doing us some good by putting issues we as a community are currently dealing with out for the world to see and try to understand... hummmm? I don't know, I feel like it's good to have roles played by brown peeps that aren't necessarily those of maids, or cholos and such, so that other non-color people can see that we too have rich stuck up valley girls, and we too can sport "real" Prada and don't just have our tias and abuelitas sewing that shit in garment factories for pennies on the dollar... and although I understand how cholo or maid roles can feel like they're being over played, I actually quite enjoy films that have characters I can identify with, cuz I for sure can't identify with these Prada wearing chicas, but I can with some cholas! I mean what's the difference between the old "negative" stereotypes and these new "rich girl, can speak Spanish, embarrassed of their culture" roles? All I'm saying is that I'm sure there's a way to create a film that will carry a positive message, with well thought out characters that don't reinforce stereotypes but that we can still relate to and can help show the world how bad ass our culture and Raza is, right? Anywayz, I'm done ranting, I just hope this movie is not as messed up as Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuhua", I can't fucking believe they made a sequel to that shit too, fuck you Disney cuz that shit is hella not cool... I guess brown peeps are taking over Beverly Hills or something!!!

and like J.Lo says "Love Don't Cost a Thing"... cuz you never know when you'll be going from Prada to Nada, hahahaha!!!

JUMPED IN

Trucha con esas rucas ayyyy... They don't fuck around!!!

Although I don't condone senseless violence, I do believe in self-defense... and to tell you the truth there is nothing like the adrenaline high you get when you beat a bitch down, there's nothing else like it... but I'm older now, I know right from wrong, but it's still sad to see these young morritas think and feel the way they do. That used to be me, so I only hope that these homegirls were able to survive the gang life, grow the fuck up, and realize that there is so much more to life. Shit, I turned out okay, but don't fuck with me cuz you WILL get checked!!! lol

My homie Frankie Quiñones just released his new Funny or Die comedy sketch video called "Cholo Whisperer" and it's fucking hilarious!!! Frankie and I used to work on the same block years and years ago, and we both grew up in Oxnard, Califas as kids so we got that cholo connection going on... I'm super proud of everything he's accomplished as a comedian, he's definitely representing for us Chicanos and peoples of color... Keep doing what chu doing homie!!!

CHICA CHIC

It's not very often that an art show will feature a Chicana artist lineup like the one for Chica Chic... I'm a huge fan of every single beautiful and talented woman exhibiting at this show, and I feel super lucky to have a few of them as homegirls...

Please do yourselves a favor and click on the artist links (below), you can thank me later! Event details below...

OPENING RECEPTION: 6:00-8:00pm, January 22nd - with a panel discussion featuring the artists in conversation with Amalia Mesa-Bains.

Namaste Hall, CIIS Main Building, 3rd Floor AND CIIS Minna Street Center, 2nd Floor
1453 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94103

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
ChicaChic includes images that honor the concepts, themes, and iconography of the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s but reflect a world that is drastically changed. The works in the show include a large canvas by
Ana Teresa Fernandez depicting a woman “washing” the beach at the U.S.-Mexican border with her hair; it’s a striking image that demands both that we engage with the current debates over immigration, and the politics of women and labor.

In addition to Fernandez, ChicaChic features the work of
Angelica Muro, Mitsy Ávila Ovalles, Favianna Rodriguez, and Shizu Saldamando. The work of these five artists varies greatly, but they all are responding visually to the shifting needs of their communities in novel ways. The exhibit is guest-curated by Raquel de Anda, formerly of Galería de la Raza. “ChicaChic is about stepping beyond the boundaries of identity, challenging stereotypes about what it means to be Chicana,” says de Anda. “It’s about the fluidity of identity and the need for new kinds of images in a fast-paced, media-saturated society.”

Also, if you live in the bay are and use the Bart make sure to keep an eye out for these
billboards that aim to inject the messages of these Chicana artist into public spaces...

SLATER'S CHICANO POWER

It's hard for me to fully express my disappointment and frustration with Arizona's law makers... last week they passed HB 2281 witch bans "Ethnic Studies" in the states K-12 grade classrooms. I cannot emphasize how important it is to be able to learn about the history of our peoples, of our ancestors, and to be able to find pride and empowerment in that. It's such a sad and scary time in both Arizona and the country. Here is a great article about HB 2281 that I found very interesting...

So now I want to share my favorite Save by the Bell episode where Slater finds his Chicano Power!!! I feel it's a great example of why having Ethnic Studies in our classrooms is so crucial...

FUCK ARIZONA'S ETHNOCENTRIC LAWS... WE NEED TO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO LEARN OUR HISTORY, OUR CULTURE AND THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR RAZA... TIERRA, JUSTICIA, Y LIBERTAD!!!

CESAR'S LAST FAST

From the depth of need and despair, people can work together, can organize themselves to solve their own problems and fill their own needs with dignity and strength.
- Cesar Chavez

This is the beginning of a social movement in fact and not in pronouncements. We seek our basic, God-given rights as human beings. Because we have suffered, and are not afraid to suffer in order to survive, we are ready to give up everything, even our lives, in our fight for social justice. -Cesar Chavez
